Omega Diatribe are a new band in the metal genre. They formed in 2008 by Gergo Hájer (guitars) and Ákos Szathmáry (bass), but their promo was released in 2012 with Dávid Metzger (drums), Attila Császár (guitars) and Gergely Komáromi (vocals) completing the band and their debut “IAPETUS” was released in 2013.
The Hungarians return 2 years after their first release with the EP “Abstract Ritual” and with Tommy Kiss replacing Dávid Metzger as the band’s drummer. They characterize themselves as an extreme groove metal band and I won’t disagree with that. But that characterization does not show the technical part of their music and their CD’s production.
They have an intense hardcore element, mainly because of the way Gergely Komáromi sings, though that isn’t something bad. Their drums are a call to the mosh pit and their bass is the essential “glue” among the rest of the instruments, fulfilling its raison d’être in an act. Their guitars add to their hardcore element from time to time, alternating between groove forms and peculiar riffs, resulting in an unworldly feeling that fits perfectly with the story behind their name. In fact as they state on their site, Omega Diatribe is an ancient secret from an unknown alien civilization concerning the use of Earth by mankind for a specific amount of time.
2 remixes complete this release: “Unshadowed Days (Perception Remix)” and “Hydrozoan Periods (Glass Medusa Remix)”, the first one being a song from their debut album and the second one from this EP. I was particularly struck by “Glass Medusa Remix” especially because it shows an interesting trend of experimentation from the band. The remix is almost unrecognizable compared to the original, having vocals and background guitars as the only common elements, while its music is mostly electronic. Personally I liked the result although it has nothing to do with the metal genre.
The EP’s production is quite good, especially when you consider that the band is into DIY and they have links to download both this EP and their first album for free, which is one more reason for me to respect this band.
