So… Omega Monolith ladies and gentlemen with their fresh album “Fungus” on their backs. The duo’s fame from Athens precedes them and of course I’m talking about their lengthy instrumental minimal soundscapes through many guitar layers and ritualistic drums. Their newest recording effort is no exception to the aforementioned rule. In my humble opinion the record begins somehow nonchalance with “The future is gone” slowly trying to sink you in oblivion with a slightly uninspired guitar looping which transforms about in the middle of the song in a sludgy part that perpetuates the nonchalance till a little before the end of it where the sinking truly starts with a tremendously atmospheric and distorted part that ends and connects it so harmonically with the next and for my shake best song of the LP, “The time has come”. This song has really embraced the post-rock aesthetics and perfectly fires up the potential horror character of the band, as I could totally imagine it as soundtrack for a film of urban madness. We move towards the end of the album now with no other than “The past is now” which a bit more experimental combined with krautrock touches escalates at a “Baroness”-like momentum where the LP finishes. “Fungus” in its 40 minutes or so duration is a well-thought work with great sound production, dark aesthetics and perfect homogeneity. It’s really easy to swallow and won’t let down their fans or fans of the genre in general, even though I’d like a bit more attention to the songwriting part as it seems to me that they focused more on their wall of sound and neglected it a little.
