‘A gigantic comet had slammed into Earth, forging earthquakes a thousand times too powerful to measure on the Richter scale, tidal waves thousands of feet high destroying major coastal cities around the world, killing billions and initiating long-term climate problems due to the massive quantities of vaporized seawater in the atmosphere. Cities were turned into oceans; oceans turned into steam. It was the beginning of a new Ice Age and the end of civilization. But for the terrified men and women chance had saved, it was also the dawn of a new struggle for survival. A struggle more dangerous and challenging than any they had ever known.’ This is the stage scenery of Lucifer’s Hammer, the science fiction post-apocalypse/survival novel by American writers Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, first published in 1977. But it is also the setting were Peasant’s latest EP unleashes it’s raw, filthy aggression. These Cape Town punks recorded 40 years after the Lucifer’s Hammer a born to be the soundtrack of the most frightened moments of humanity EP, that it shows the excellent skills of its creators. Flirting with grindcore this speed hardcore mammoth blends 80’s heavy metal rhythm section with d-beat and sludgy breakdowns providing as a top notch full of distortion release that will satisfy everyone in love with pure hate and uncountable hostility. The first three songs ‘The Throne’, ‘Drowning’ and ‘Bullets’ are less than 2 minutes long but they are enough to deliver the band’s bloody message. The title track is a bit longer (02:41) and it is one of the coolest songs I’ve heard this year. The closer ‘Call To Burn’ is almost 5 minutes long with a more sludgy approaching, still angry still ferocious hardcore influenced by d-beat, death metal, crossover and more as all 5 songs of this excellent EP.
