Phoenix Rising: “Solace” by Countless Skies

We regularly receive promo material of young bands in our inbox pleading to give them a listen and write something about them. We love to discover new potential, but it is not always easy to slip in a post between the larger news items. Occasionally, however, I really feel the need to share with the world. When I opened my inbox earlier this morning I found the new single ‘Solace’ of melodic death metallers Countless Skies. Boldly stating they are the UK-based answer to bands like Insomnium, Omnium Gatherum, Be’lakor, Ghost Brigade and Dark Tranquillity, this was a claim I needed to hear before I could believe it.

The acoustic intro followed by melodic twin guitars is immediately reminiscent of Insomnium. Ross King’s vocals do not reach as low as Niilo Sevanen’s, but the influence is unmistakable. It’s one thing to claim you follow in someone’s footsteps, but another to actually pull it off. ‘Solace’ is an intense track, drenched with the obligatory melancholic passages if you strive to stand with the Nordic giants of gloomy melodic death metal. The style does not feel forced, however. In fact it is inviting to hear more from these guys. Definitely something to follow in the future!

With this great new track after their first self-titled EP ‘Countless Skies’ the future looks promising for the quartet from Hertfordshire, England. They get the chance to introduce themselves to a bigger audience during the upcoming Bloodstock festival. Let’s hope they get picked up by a larger band to cross the Channel and embark on a tour throughout Europe.
