Coming from France, Post-Mortem have returned into musical action by releasing their first full length record “God with Horns”. Fifteen years after their last EP release (“Mankind Autopsy”, 2001) Post-Mortem are back with a powerful record that has actually left me with a good taste.

“God with Horns” features classic Death Metal structures, having a more modern approach, with distorted vocals and scattered samples all over the place. Additionally, thrash patterns and melodic outbreaks are also present, adding variety and diversity. The riffing is sick and razor sharp, while the drums have a grindcore quality, as they’re always blasting in the background. So many elements in just one record! Don’t get me wrong, I ain’t got a problem with that. On contraire, each of the different elements is used properly and in balanced amounts, so the final product radiates freshness and raw energy. The rawness of the record’s sound is significantly boosted by the barbaric distorted vocals. Good thing is that there’s a great deal of diversity in vocals as well, as gang vocals, samples of choir and different distortions add variety to the whole vocal effort. I got some issues with the mixing process and especially with the way the drums were processed. Their sound seems unnatural and hollow; similar to you snapping a pencil on your desk. The low quality of the drums is sometimes a deal – breaker for me, as I keep elaborating on them and mentally isolating them from the rest of the compositions, therefore I cannot enjoy the rest of the record as I please. BUT, to be fair, that double – kicks relentlessly pounding save the day.

All things considered, “God with Horns” is decent comeback release, although I’ve got to admit that I was a bit incredulous at first about whether Post-Mortem will successfully deliver after so many years of absence. I guess we’ll be hearing from them soon again; the band seems to have much in store for us.  Keep it coming, boys!
