Psycrence: “A Frail Deception”

It’s been a long time since I enjoyed a melodic Prog Power metal album. At this point I would like to mention that I am one of those who think that “Octavarium” is the last great Dream Theater album. Just to set the baseline for this review. In “A Frail Deception” you can expect to find catchy melodies, hypnotic atmosphere, professional sound, sophisticated cover and art layout (Colin Marks-Nevermore, Scar Symmetry…) and very good songs delivered in perfection. The members of the band are made of high quality, anti-rust metallic material. No WD-40 is needed here! While listening to the album you will remember the best moments of Conception, mixed with what Fates Warning are doing after “Disconnected”, the heaviness of Disturbed, and all of them adjusted towards a Symphony X sound (Jens Bogren has done the mastering). What more can you ask for?

This is their debut album. Imagine what they are capable of doing in their second one when all their influences have settled down and a more personal sound is developed. We have to keep an eye on them; I think they will surprise us greatly in the future.
