My first contact with Pyrexia’s music was when I heard Catastrophic’s debut album “The Cleansing”; an amazing album. It was back then that Pyrexia changed their name, due to the cooperation with Obituary’s guitarist Trevor Perez. Based on that release, I started looking more into the band.
“Sermon of Mockery” is the band’s debut album, originally released back in 1993 by Spanish Drowned Productions cult label. It is widely hailed as a classic of the brutal death metal genre, as New York’s Pyrexia played a pivotal role in the creation of it – alongside bands such as Suffocation, Internal Bleeding, Immolation, Cannibal Corpse, Incantation. Today, 22 years later, Century Media re-releases this “New York death metal”-styled diamond in an impressive edition which contains the “Liturgy of Impurity” demo (1992) and “Hatredangeranddisgust” EP (1994).
In this underground classic, “Sermon Of Mockery”, you can hear brutal and raw death metal music, the way it should be played! In case you are not aware, two of Pyrexia’s members moved to legendary Suffocation through the years; this by itself shows the quality and greatness of the band. One of the band’s greatest problems, in my opinion, has been the endless changes in the line up through their career: we are talking about more than 20 musicians…
It is a great opportunity for new fans to come to know this underrated band and album and Century Media has made the whole package really interesting with all those bonus tracks. A “must have” album for the fans of brutal death metal.
