Raider – Darker Than Night

Raider’s “Darker Than Night” stands out as a forgotten gem from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal era, originating from the from the small town of Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire, England in the mid-1980s. Although their career was brief and limited to a couple of demos and some live tracks, the quality of their work is notably high. The compilation released by Obscure NWOBHM Releases (2020) and two years later via Lost Realm Records on vinyl (Limited to 250 numbered copies (150x on black vinyl + 100x on ruby red vinyl, exclusive to Lost Realm Records store including: insert, band promo photo, hand-numbered certificate card and woven patch available on the ruby red vinyl only) , which includes these demos and live recordings, showcases Raider’s punchy, heavy, and melodic style that echoes early Def Leppard’s raw edge before their shift to a more commercial sound. Raider is yet another excellent example of how the NWOBHM influenced an entire generation in their awakening to music. Formed in 1983 by Nick Singleton and Mark Grimmett (brother of the charismatic Steve Grimmett, lead singer of GRIM REAPER, LIONSHEART, ONSLAUGHT, etc.), Raider tried with its two cassette demo recordings to conquer their space in post-83 British Metal scene. The wave of the garage bands had passed and the public was asking for more quality, both in songwriting and productions – and Raider brought that! If you’re a fan of bands like DEALER (“First Strike” era), SAMURAI or CHARIOT, don’t miss this band. The CD is available through Sonic Age Records, and former members Nick Singleton and Mark Grimmett continue to make music with their band 3Sixty, which carries a classic rock vibe reminiscent of Raider’s sound. Musically, “Darker Than Night” is characterized by straightforward, muscular songs typically around four minutes long, featuring solid chord progressions, catchy hooks, and tasteful guitar solos. The opener “Excess” is a prime example, galloping with energy and featuring a memorable sing-along chorus. Tracks like “This is the Law” and “Lay Waste to the World” vary from complex structures to darker, brooding atmospheres, demonstrating the band’s versatility within the NWOBHM framework. The live cuts, particularly “Beyond the Sea,” highlight their ability to blend powerful riffs with dynamic shifts, maintaining tight performance throughout. Despite their evident talent, Raider fell victim to the oversaturated NWOBHM scene of the time, which limited their opportunities to break through. However, “Darker Than Night” remains an excellent listen and a testament to the depth of talent within the NWOBHM movement beyond the well-known bands. Fans of classic heavy metal and NWOBHM will find much to appreciate in Raider’s energetic and melodic approach.
