‘Ylös Raunioista/Risen From The Ruins’ is the third studio album by the Finnish speed metal band Ranger. It was released on December 9, 2022 on Ektro Records. In case you were wondering where the Hell these guys are, it’s been 6 years since their latest effort ‘Speed & Violence’ which was out via Spinefarm on December 2016. So probably many have forgotten their brilliantly violent Speed/Heavy. The 100% Exciter and Razor worship sound was more than just a tribute to bothCanadians gods of course, and had many elements that made them attractive to anyone who love straightforward dynamic compositions that breath 80’s with harmonized guitar leads, sharp memorable riffs, up tempo rhythms and leather-dressed bands which members wear nail wristbands on their hands. Now in this third attempt the group haven’t kept the same song structure and writing motif but still has the same spirit, delivering 8 (x2) songs (sang in Finnish and English) of pure Speed Metal the old way. Mostly on this album they continue on the path they laid on their last demo entitled ‘Insurgency’ (limited edition cassette out in January 14th, 2021). Just to make things clear, actually the album contains versions of the same songs in both Finnish and English. The answer to any questioning about this comes from the band itself: “Dealing with important themes felt most natural in the mother tongue, but we wanted to make the message clear to an international audience as well”. The band felt more comfortable to talk about issues like rising militarism, unemployment and modern life as slavery in the capitalist system in their native language. So as the lyrics deal with important themes Ranger also wanted to make the lyrics comprehensible to more people beyond Finland (and their international audience) wisely decided to make the album both in Finnish and English. Musically speaking the songs flirt more with Speed than with Heavy Metal, compared to their earlier releases. ‘Ylös Raunioista/Risen From The Ruins’ was recorded in Miko Sipilä’s home studio with a Fostex A8 reel-to-reel tape recorder. This decision was made as a result of the ‘feelings’ the band has towards music industry so probably it was a natural choice after being fed up with the music business and ”real” studios. Both versions of the songs were mixed separately. Kudos for the guest musicians on the album such as the band’s session live guitarist Atte Nikku from Rapid and John Finne from Obnoxious Youth. Emma Grönqvist and Sebastian Bergman from Chevalier and Iiro Karttunen from Emissary provided also guest vocals. Personally speaking I liked the music and really enjoyed the raw energy and the sheer aggressiveness as I also appreciated some new ‘tricks’ such as the perfect combination of acoustic drums with electronic sounds and a drum machine in the instrumentation. Hopefully this album will mark a new era for the Finnish band. A promising and substantial (the record lasts more than 72 minutes long) new start !!!
