The time was almost ripe, so I and Blaster started making our way to Clash, to enjoy the band we love perform live before us. Who is Blaster? I’ll let you know in the next article! What’s the band? Ratos de Porao, of course! What else!?! Eventually, we arrived at the venue earlier than we thought. We walked into the narrow street behind the Club and entered the courtyard. There, a strangely pleasant surprise awaited us: the club was closed and the only ones sitting inside out were Joao Gord and Jao, two or three Brazilians, some Germans, so we being Greeks completed the set!
Ratos De Porao were very friendly and loose, which suits best the old-school punk types they are… As time passed, more people arrived at the venue. The club opened at some point and the 200 attendees got it. We went inside as well to check the prices and to our surprise the gig cost just 10 Euros! What we saw inside was a huge banner on the wall, the infamous Nazi Punks Fuck Off and some anti-fascist flags, indicating the identity of the venue. The club was filled with too many Brazilians, Italians, Germans and I don’t know who else… Oh! And Greeks! Let’s not forget that!
As the heat was getting in our nerves and touching dangerous levels, the support act went up on stage. The band was the Germans Antilligent, playing noisy punk with two singers. They seemed tight as a band. The crowd was digging them, they were digging the gig and altogether, we were gonna explode from the heat.
Twelve songs later, they left the stage free for the Rats, whom we were all waiting for! Within 10 minutes they were ready and started their show. Just from the first notes, Gordo started dancing with his infamous kind of dance and in the way only he can, without getting tired or stopping! Juninho in bass duties, jumped more than the lot of Sick of it all; Jao in guitars (and the very founder of the band) was dressed as a Latin American mobster and Boka on drums made a sweat – lake around him from the first minute. We were part of a family congregation, without boring wasted dudes, with the tattoo ink flooding the place and a generally cheerful atmosphere among such different people from different parts of the world and from various music scenes. If this didn’t execute the musical standards and the uptight minds, then what did?
It’s been an hour; I think my flesh is melting by the heat. Yet, Ratos are still up fucking up our brains! A total of one hour and ten minutes of merciless head banging, and although it was their last night of the tour, they kicked our asses!
Diet Paranoia, Crucificados Pelo Sistema, Anarkophobia, Criancas Sem Futuro and two covers of Extreme Noise Terror and Ramones were some songs they performed.
Ratos is one of the oldest and most respected bands without label impediment to their music and one of the most solid on stage. I’m really happy that I was present at such a gig with such a beautiful performance…
Till next time … We are Ratos de Porao from Braziiiiil !!!
