I’ve always been an enthusiast of the Australian extreme metal scene. It seems that over the years, the Aussies have managed to create music whose quality and characteristics are somehow different from the ones in the rest of the globe. It’s like they’re living in their own sphere. Their music stands out especially when various genres are fused together in a surprisingly good mix; genres that at first glance seem incompatible.
The aforementioned are proven by Rebel Wizard’s latest release, the EP entitled “Invocation of the Miserable Ones”, released independently by the band on last December.
Rebel Wizard manage to mix Black / Thrash elements with some Black Ambient bits and pieces while the basic structure of the tracks is a Heavy / Power one. I know! Crazy right?
Despite the fact that the decision of combining those genres together shows an eagerness to show off and create a huge name for himself (NKSV is the only band member handling all instruments), when you’ll pay close attention to what Rebel Wizard has to offer then you’ll realize that the efforts are far from impulsive or rushed. It seems that NKSV knows what he’s doing and he is actually doing it good.
Elaborating on the musical part of the record, what you’ll come across will remind you of Motörhead plus Judas Priest plus Aura Noir plus some NWOBHM elements. The riffings have a dark, black / ambient approach though the drums follow simple – kind of heavy metal – patterns. NKSV’s vocals are fierce and sharp, balancing between growls and screeches. The atmosphere created is eerie yet energetic, dark but urging some beer – drinking.
If you wanna listen to some classic Heavy Metal / NWOBHM meets Scandinavian Black / Ambient Black metal and actually feel content, give Rebel Wizard’s latest release a shot. You could be surprised.
