And we have a winner! Probably the best album of the year for me. I can’t recall any other release while this beast spins as ‘Whispers of Lore’ is one of the most epic moments of this damn year (along with Triumpher’s ‘Storming The Walls’). I searched for the band that comes from Nicosia Cyprus and their story roaming and searching for their moment in time in order to record an album, waiting for a dozen years for their dream to come true would have been a triteness story but teaching to narrate to younger bands that “want it all and want it now” approaching but if you hear their music then this is must hear “shut up you prank that you want to be a rockstar without even one good song” preaching of using the scars of the past as motivation to grow into a higher consciousness of self ! 80’s underground metal at its best, with a voice that I had for years to listen to; rude in the veins of Leather Leonne (as if she was singing from the catacombs) and hedonistic heroic. Cult as hell and epic as fuck Receiver deliver 8 hymns plus a divine heavy metal cover on the Sega 16bit arcade game Golden Axe (original came in 1989) and its synth made theme given it its proper epic touches and Heavy Metal glory! Their work is tremendous and the big thing is that they start “Whispers…” with killer songs but the album doesn’t fall or being less dynamic in its entirety as it never loses any of its power, the catchy melodies or the massive harmonized riffing and the fast soloing. Even the awesome closer “Prowess and Decay” is a crescendo/demonstration of Nicoletta’s (Kyprianou) skills and how easy US Hard Rock can sound epic when it’s been played by killer bands like Receiver. Great musicians and brilliant songwriting, when meet as it is been done here, can only lead to masterpieces like this album. The rhythm section is like cement and the guitar duo totally crushing! Addictive parts that just can’t get them out of your head, some tempo changes as in “Falling to Dust” or “Trepasser” that makes you return to them again and again or some melodies that makes you way pump the volume to 11 and scream/sing with your fists high it’s lyrics. “Whispers of Lore” is as anthemic as if it written and sung by warriors after the battle. Still my favorite is “Arrow” that is also my personal fav song of the year by far. All album that is a highlight in its entirety, that I can’t find any excuse for you not to buy it immediately!!!
