While reality becomes a sloppy written sci-fi fiction published in cheaply printed paper book that would easily become a shitty low budget B’ movie, Death Metal becomes once again popular among extreme music fans. As a result more and more full of quality pops up from every corner of this global scene. “Malignant Reality” is the sophomore album from New Jersey based Death metal group of Replicant. It follows the highly acclaimed by the underground circles debut album entitled “Negative Life”. As probably their moniker betrays them (the noun replicant is used in science fiction and describes a genetically engineered or artificial being created as an exact replica of a particular human being) there’s a sci-fi environment or concept behind them.
The whole in its entirety album is an Avant-grade amalgam of technical death metal in the veins of Gorguts, Revulsion, Norse, Demilich, Negativa, Diskord, Wormed, Burnt By The Sun and/or Ulcerate under a futuristic prism where progressive meets brutality and passionate groovy death metal flirts with catchy tunes. The album flows easily yet unpredictable creating a very interesting final result as twists, breaks and turns are present in a plethora of modern elements that are blended with a Morbid Angel or Gorguts foundation in a perfectly balanced between modern approaching and traditional ingredients. Truth be told Malignant Reality follows the same path as its precursor. Only of course with extra doses of maturity and self-confidence by the band’s members that deliver a top-notch performance in their instruments while Michael Gonçalves throat vomits the lyrics with futility. Great riffing, solid rhythm section and songs like ‘Caverns of Insipid Reflection’, ‘Coerced to Be’ and ‘Dressed in Violence’ or even the most experimental moments like ‘Ektoskull’ (there’s a video for this song too) or ‘The Ubiquity of Time’ will guarantee you that if you buy this album you’ll be stuck with Replicant. Nominee for tech-death metal album of the year definitely! The album is out via Transcending Obscurity Records limited to 375 copies in 5 different variants (75 copies per variant).
