Revocation – Empire Of The Obscene (Re-release)

Genre: Death / Thrash
Company: Metalblade
Country: USA
Year: 2015 (2008)

Those familiar with Revocation will probably wonder why they are reading a review about a 2008 release. The answer is simple. When the American band released their debut “Empire of the Obscene” in 2008 it was a limited edition album (1000 pieces). At the request of their fans Metal Blade and the band decided to re-release it with 3 bonus tracks from their demo EP “Summon the Spawn”, released in 2006.

What to say about this album? In many ways it is a journey to the past. Not so much because it is a re-release, it is just how obvious the band was influenced by specific music genres of the 80s and 90s. If I didn’t know the release date and someone told me that this was a 20 year old album I would probably believe him. That isn’t bad per se, it is just the fact that music has evolved and I am not so sure how much this would fit in today.

The bonus tracks are, as expected, quite raw. Full of rage those songs are a noisy ode. They are partly opposed to the course of the band, but that is only natural, it’s been 9 years and 5 full albums since the release of the demo EP.

Overall this album left me with mixed feelings. Generally I am never excited about re-releases, though in this case their choice was understandable because of the limited availability of “Empire of the Obscene” when it was first released. The influences from the past are, as I mentioned before, quite intensebut the band mitigates them with the introduction of their own technical elements. And while the bonus tracks further highlight these influences, they also show us how much Revocation have evolved as a band between their EP and their debut and in their course during the past 9 years.
