Even though they’re a fresh addition to the extreme scene, Rivers Of Nihil have already caused quite a response.

Their new album, under the name «Monarchy», represents quite well the genre and I think that even the artwork instantly makes the listeners understand that this is something promising; something that’s proven by the first hearing of the album’s intro, which I thought is actually impressive.

The tracks are generally based on obscure melodies, which are accompanied by heavy riffs at very high speeds (obviously, since it’s a technical Death Metal band). Of course, they also have points, ranging from mid-tempo to groove rates, as well as some really loud and brutal beatdowns. Apart from the dark atmosphere each track creates, the solos come to give a different tone to the overall composition. Beyond its loudness, the record is very melodic and made me feel quite “happy” from time to time. The bass, as in most bands of the genre, is based on very technical compositions and in songs like “Dehydrate”, the bass line kicks our asses! The truth is that as far as the vocals are concerned, I expected them to be more brutal, but then I realized that’s exactly what is needed to make their sound heavier.

What I unfortunately noticed about the record is that the compositions are indeed sterile, giving me the feeling that something was constantly missing from the tracks. My interest was captivated only by a few tracks and for that reason, I don’t think I’ll listen to this record again or the tracks more than once.
