Kurt Vonnegut Jr. (November 11, 1922 – April 11, 2007) was an American writer. In a career spanning over 50 years, he published 14 novels, three short story collections, five plays, and five nonfiction works, with further collections being published after his death, but most men now only his most famous work, Slaughterhouse-Five, also known as The Children’s Crusade: A Duty-Dance with Death, the science fiction infused anti-war masterpiece novel that was first published in 1969. Well there’s a video in the internet that Vonnegut offers eight essential tips on how to write a short story to new writers. “Every sentence must do one of two things–reveal character or advance the action.” In a parallelism if we can use his advice in music, then every song must advance the action. Well then if we are speaking about Rob Zombie, we have an issue on that…
Robert Bartleh Cummings may be an artist with the true meaning of the word as besides a musician he is also a director -and a writer-, but in his entire music career never used this advice at all. In his new album (his seventh solo album since leaving the moniker White Zombie back in 1998) entitled “The Lunar Injection Kool Aid Eclipse Conspiracy” once again the preludes/samples wig outs between tracks are way too boring and meaningless. Did we expect something different from Rob Zombie? The strange, elusive and sometimes confusing lyrics, the danceable rhythms, the electro sound, the heavy guitars and the psychedelic artwork are once again here. No traditional song structures, as the only thing that brings in mind something traditional is the Alice Cooper hint in Zombie’s voice and the rock’ n roll influences in the veins of Detroit of the late 60’s-early 70’s that are present here and there during the album. But all the trademark anthems about monsters, aliens, destruction and mayhem for all cowboys (and UFO’s) of Americana to dance have an answer to “The Lunar Injection Kool Aid Eclipse Conspiracy” songs. I can’t see why any of these not to be a hit or a live set pleaser for Zombie’s fans. But on the other hand Rob zombie doesn’t care for all that, he just wants to make a proper soundtrack for his demons and his monsters…Highlights: “Shadow of the Cemetery Man”, the country “18th Century Cannibals, Excitable Morlocks and a One-Way Ticket on the Ghost Train” , the Carpenter’s style ‘Shake Your Ass – Smoke Your Grass’ and the criminally underrated John 5’s riffs. Truth be told, probably only his fanatics will really enjoy it after all…
