Genre: Dark/Black Metal
Country: Greece
Label: Season of Mist
Year: 2015

25 yearsof black metal history, 31 songs, 2 CDs, and 135 minutes of Rotting Christ when performing live at Gagarin 205 venue in Athens, during two sold out nights of December 2013…but, enough with the numbers and the metrics. I have actually attended one of these shows and the atmosphere was really amazing, as well as the band’s performance. 1+1=2. I don’t like to state the obvious, but in each live appearance of Rotting Christ quality and awesomeness is somehow guaranteed. The same goes for their albums of course. How many bands can claim that? Very, very, very few.

I would like to spend some lines of this review to complain about the way this album was promoted…as the first official live album of the band. There were 2 live recordings on DVD before (In Domine Sathana and Non Serviam – A 20 Year Apocryphal Story), andin the second recording an official audio CD was included. Details. Details.Details. At this (high) level that Rotting Christhave elevated us, even the smallest detail matters. What do I mean? Actually, there was no need for such an album. However, it succeeds in teleporting the listener right into the explosive atmosphere of those two nightsas both the band and the audience were really alive n’ kicking. I could characterize it is a representative souvenir of this very creative period of the band.

Lucifer Over Athens works well as a best-of album, or as an appetizer for their new upcoming one, or as an introduction to their discographyin case this review you are reading now is your first ever encounter with the band. I recommend you to look for their regular albums and then try to see them live in order to grasp the full meaning of a Rotting Christ experience. The latter is no particularly difficult since they are playing almost everywhere in the world. Keep your eyes open because most probably they will be playing very soon in a place next to you!
