“Ruins” is RUSTY PACEMAKER’s sophomore full-length album, following his first attempt back in 2011 entitled “In Blackness and Light”. I’m writing “his” as behind this project you can find the Austrian artist Rusty Hessel as its mastermind. You can find somegood ideas in this album but I’m afraid that the whole result is a bit of confusing and sorry to say this, weak. There are songs where the atmosphere tries to be doomy and depressive (“Pillow of Silence”,“Candlemess”, “Night Angel”), others where guitars (should have) taken the first role and Rusty could unveil his singing skills and vocal range (“The Game”, “Ruins”), but mostly all of them are mediocre compositions and rather weak songs that trying without a result to be a sort of a hit (especially “Matter of Mind”, “Knowing”, “Oean of Life”). Honestly I love the teutonic tint on the voice but this approach of Rusty’s “less is more” singing was a bit of annoying. So without saying that the album is bad I wouldn’t recommended when outside are so many great albums of melancholic goth rock.
