I have said it before that with the technological progress in music and the cost reduction of recording / production we have a great increase of notable releases. This is increase is so big is such that we often don’t get wind of these releases because they get lost in the seer amount of new CDs and we don’t have enough time to listen to everything new.
Sadhus and Agnes Vein, the bands participating in this EP, both belong to this category. Both have existed for quite some time with Sadhus forming in 2008 and Agnes Vein being even older, being part of the scene since 2001. Nevertheless, I never had the opportunity to listen to them until now with the release of their split EP, allowing me to improve my knowledge on the Greek scene.
Sadhus are as sludge band from Athens. They identify their music as I.ntelligent P.sycho S.ludge (yes, that’s the way they spell it on their facebook page). I have to admit that sludge is not my genre. It’s not that I don’t like it but I haven’t really listened to a lot of sludge. Their song “Abduction” is quite a “pleasant” song though. It is heavy, slow and you can feel it pulling you down and capturing you with its distorted riffs. Obviously it is not a song for every hour of the day, but it is not something that you won’t like listening to if it randomly pops up in a playlist.
Agnes Vein on the other hand are a doom (with some black elements) band from Thessaloniki. I would say that they have adopted the classic sound of the genre but they add their own style in a result that has its own identity. Heavy riffs, atmospheric vocals at certain points, even though their main vocals are more brutal and the rhythm is captivating throughout the song.
Sadhus “The Smoking Community” 4/6
Agnes Vein 4.5/6
