Well, I’ll probably not do justice to this one. You see, it coincided to review this Ep along with Visigoth (with which I’m pretty fixated on), so the comparisons were inevitable. However, this is a remarkable enough work, in fact this is a new beginning for the Danes “Momentum”, who had released the decent “A world in ruins” in 2012. “Through the Iron Fortress” is a six song Ep (one of them is an intro) and, as far as I know, this is a self-financed release. Their sound is quite remarkable, well-played classic metal with some Maiden elements (well, who plays classic metal and is not even remotely influenced by Maiden?), Accept, grafted with Scandinavian metal, also with some early Queensryche sound and a drop of Sanctuary in the vocals. All that sound pretty nice, don’t they? Luckily enough, the European bands have left behind the phase when everyone wanted to sound like Stratovarious, Gama Ray and Helloween (all three are gods, though their imitators at the most part didn’t achieve that much). As it comes to songs that stand out, we have “Iron Forest” and “Final March”, with the singer giving great performances. “Prisoners of War” and “Fifth Computerworld” (pretty good bassline) are probably the most “European” songs of the album, both very worthy (coming from me that I’m a fan of the American sound, means they’re really good). The ballad “The Easy Way Out” is pretty good for a ballad, it resembles Maiden at some parts. The truth is that ballads are a tough task in metal sound, they suit more properly in hard rock bands (although one could say that since there has been the song “Sleeping in the fire” anything is possible). Altogether, the Ep “Through the Iron Fortress” is a solid work that proves that Savage Machine is on the right track. I hope that this will lead them in releasing a full-length soon.
