There I was, relaxing and thinking that I haven’t listened to any really “new” or “fresh” release in the Swedish death sub-genre, when our chief editor approached me and said “listen to Sentient Horror”. And that’s the moment when you pump up the volume, full of fear that what you will listen to will be something common and pointless, but instead you are left speechless. Sentient Horror are a new band and “Ungodly Forms” is literally their debut album. Even though Dan Swanö (ex – Edge of Sanity, ex – Bloodbath, Witherscape) described them as one of the best SweDeath projects of the past few years there are not Swedish (or European).
Their sound makes any comment redundant. In terms of both song writing and production this a quality release. Very interesting album that doesn’t bore the listener as shorter tracks don’t have the time to become boring (duration and writing- wise), while the longer ones are so good that it is impossible for any lover of the genre to get bored. This variety in track duration and the order we listen to them make it even easier to keep the listener’s interest undiminished. Icing on the cake? Dan Swanö’s mastering of this album. He is, after all, someone who is familiar with this genre and its sound and he is probably one of the reasons this release sounds so good.
A remarkable debut for the American band who manages to combine its member’s influences with their own personal “touch” in an album what will satisfy every death metal fanatic.
