These guys from Ioannina (Greece) and their weird band name Sfyrokalymnon (a combination of the Greek words for hammer and chisel), have been active since 2001. However they were put to ice until 2011 and just a few months ago, they managed to release their debut album. Their name only is a good trigger for you to start digging in their stuff.
Those who dig manly, American, raw 80s-90s heavy/speed metal, with fierce thrashy vocals and most of all those who support the Greek scene, should definitely check Sfyrokalymnon, as they match their criteria. Unfortunately, the production of the record and the sound don’t fall far away from the patterns of the past; however the passion, the badassery and the power the band show in the record, make you overlook the aforementioned negative points. There’s no “great” track in the album, but examples of good music are the tracks «Vipera», «The Metal Emperor», the title track and the humorous hymn to the Greek tsipouro called «Tsiproholic». Thank God for this one; enough with the beers and vodka.
It’s a notable release by a Greek band that deserves the support of heavy/speed/thrash enthusiasts.
