Shadow In The Darkness – Arcanum Experimentia Praetiosum EP

Genre : Technical Death Metal
Country : Ελλάδα
Label : Self-Released
Year : 2014

The first work by Shadow In The Darkness from Piraeus is another production completed at Made In Hell Studios. Wherefore I have come across several other recordings made in this studio without making any special reference, I would like to express my congrats for the solid sound produced in all their projects that I have listened to up to date.

After this short deviation from the review, let’s get to the point. Even from the first seconds of “Arcanum Experimentia Praetiosum” one can witness the band’s admiration for Decapitated –the fact that the drummer and the guitarist are brothers produces a strange déjà vu- from their “Nihility” era. And that is not bad at all, as it indicates that these guys have set high standards for themselves regarding their technical skill and songwriting. Still do they have what it takes to stand in a comparison with the mighty Poles? I suppose they do, mutatis mutandis. The band’s technical abilities are great. The drummer performs not just skillfully and powerfully, but also he seems to have great confidence in himself (as he should), that allows him to “built” unique themes on the songs, something seldom achieved by someone with such small experience. Same goes for the guitars and bass. Their top-notch skill gives them the freedom to write songs constituting as much technique as they find fitting. I found it necessary to mention the unique lead guitar shredding, which is melodic and inflaming at the same time. The vocals are not extremely deep and harsh (with the exception of Silvan Totem), however I think that this approach is more fitting to the EP’s style. The songs, as you probably have gathered, are filled with rhythm-shifting, from blastbeats to repeating and crawling tech-death parts ala Meshuggah (The Sanatorium), finding those last ones quite unfitting, I have to say.

Ultimately, I trust that what we have here is a band that is here to stay for good in the scene. It should, most certainly, keep working non-stop mostly in order to shape solid personality and perfect its songwriting, since the band member’s performing skills are super. Fans of the genre should hustle to check this EP.
