Since the COVID-19 is now a common virus, as I thought it was from the start (yet a deadly one) and all lockdowns is as far as we are talking left behind, in this new post-pandemic landscape gigs and festivals are again a reality, so we had so many live performances here in Greece too as in the whole globe from the start of the year. In Metal Invader we were writing almost every two days an article about the upcoming bands that would perform and Slipknot was one of them. Actually, Slipknot had probably one of the highlight performances this summer in Athens when 25,000 fans of the band left their throats on Release Festival singing and dancing to their rhythms. As we were completely burned out all the editors’ team. I personally forgot to post an article that ranked all Slipknot albums from worst to best…Well Slipknot don’t have a bad album so we can use “worst” for any album of them yet as since their debut every record was a wise move and release, personally speaking the only album I wasn’t taken by the throat from its very first second was the Gray Chapter album. Not that it was weak or bad, but it is my least favourite from these guys. So, my mistake can be fixed now that we have “the End so far” LP. I can add this new album to the ranking and believe me it will be placed high! Every record from Slipknot is the talk of the town and every single one of them features songs ready to be heard in the arenas worldwide. Corey has this blessing writing big songs. Not only hit singles in terms of commercial success. He can write emotional, catchy with excellent personal or political verses and be at the same time edgy, melodic, extreme and heavy. Their previous effort was a blast and whoever thinks that Corey & co would change their pattern for any reason he is fooling himself. Slipknot follow their own road as they pathed their way that allow them to have 2 or 3 songs that they can experiment without losing their identity. So once again they move in their comfort zone while they could try a couple of not so “new” tricks. Of course, I can’t use 100% the word “new” as we’ve heard this motif several times in Stone Sour albums and we loved it! I can’t blame Slipknot for trying to sound a bit different from their exact previous album that was definitely more extreme as I can’t also blame their fans for asking an album with a plethora of singles or hymns -so as the new generation asks for more anthems from its heroes- to sing along in the live shows or in their living rooms as they spin the record a Sunday afternoon. Best moments in the album comes with the opener and “The Dying Song (Time To Sing)”, “Acidic”, and “Finale”. To cut a long story short, “the end so far” is a well-crafted top-notch LP, not as heavy as some would have wait for, but catchy as hell, as expected though…
