Sorcerer – Sorcerer EP

Last Updated on 07:54 PM by Giorgos Tsekas

Genre: Doom Metal
Label: Hammerheart Records
Country: Sweden
Year: 2015

After the opus the band released a few months ago, an album considered as one of the tops for this year, “In The Shadows of Inverted Cross”, now it was about time to release the same titled collection from Hammerheart . It came out twenty years ago by Brainticket of John Perez (of gods Solitude Aeturnus) and was re-released in 2011 by Forged In Fire in cooperation with Brainticket with a different cover, plus two extra tracks (twelve and fourteen tracks respectively in each version).

Now another version from Hammerheart surfaces again with fourteen tracks, but with a different tracklist, i.e. “Highlander” taking the place of “Stargazer” (which wasn’t a good selection by the company since “Stargazer” is one of the best covers ever).

There’s nothing we can say about the songs or the band. Sorcerer enjoy a vast and highly valued appreciation amidst the underground scene, even if they released two demos in 1989 and 1992 and then disbanded. They stumbled upon the rise of death metal, so no labels showed their interest back then. If it wasn’t for John Perez who released these tracks on CD format, then even fewer people would knew them. Their musical style hasn’t changed much since then, so those who don’t know them, if you listened to the «In The Shadows Of The Inverted Cross» then you’ll certainly dig the rest of the songs, as they move in the same style with the album and Anders Engberg’s voice is a bit more rough and wild because of his young age and urge to thrive. A great talent had been discovered, but was lost for about 25 years.

Fourteen hymns of epic doom metal with a very good sound, and if you are fans of Tony Martin’s era in Black Sabbath (who isn’t?), grab the record without a second thought. Of course, it is addressed to friends of Solitude Aeturnus, Candlemass, Rainbow etc, as well.
