Doom philosophy. The way you treat life, as hard as it gets you push forward, against all odds. Your indomitable will is the strength that smashes all boundaries and makes your way through the unkind plans of fate. This band knows very well about injustice and despite their unluckiness they stood their ground, looked life in the eye and continued the pursuit of their doom metal dream. Being around since 1993 Sorrows Path faced a lot of problems that could easily make them quit a hundred times. The death of founding member, bassist Takis Drakopoulos from serious brain disease and the motorcycle accident of the other founding member, guitarist Kostas Salomidis that almost left him completely paralyzed as it seems couldn’t stop the course of the band. In 2006 after Kostas was recovered they re-released their debut demo of 1995 and 1996’s promo in one cd which came out from eat metal records. Up next followed their first full length album ‘The Rough Path of Nihilism’ in 2010. 2014 finds them stronger than ever, their Doom Philosophy is revealed and the doom metal community rejoices.
The black and white owl in the amazing cover reveals the secret of the philosophy. Wisdom cannot be gained that simple. One has to ‘bleed’ the sadness and despair of life. One has to pass through hell to gain the knowledge of the destination. Through sorrow the path is clear. Eleven songs of fine doom based in the lessons teachings of Memento Mori, Solitude Aeturnus and Candlemass. Compositions although over-worked to their very core yet‘naked’ standing in the eye of the doom cyclone that sorrow path forged perfectly to the last second. The details are the ones that push the quality over the edge. The ‘haunted’ female vocal parts and classic guitars scattered throughout the album the voice of the infamous Snowy Shaw in the amazing Therion-ish ‘Everything Can Change’ the keyboard parts and growls strategically put here and there. The mellow voice of Angelos Ioannidis feels just right for this kind of singing, it’s like he was born to sing doom metal. The robust rhythm section compiled by Stavros Giannakos on Bass and Fotis Mountouris on drums, gives extra depth to the songs. The thing that impresses me the most though is the work that has been done in the guitars. Kostas Salomidis and Giannis Tziligkakis are giving a seminar of threnody. The heavy riffs, the melodies but most important the solos. Classic doom metal with some progressive touches filtered through the trademark sound of the band. ‘A Dance With The Dead’, Everything Can Change’ ‘The King With A Crown Of Thorns’ ‘The Venus And The Moon’ and the video clip of the album ‘Epoasis’ are the best songs in this effort.
Sorrows Path give heart and soul in each one of the songs here. Every note, every lyric is there for a reason. Greek metal can bragfor one of its finest works. If you like your Doom with lots of feeling, epic-ness, melancholy and classic heavy metal solos this is the right choice. Doom rules eternally!
