Stainless, a hard rock band from Portland, Oregon, has released their captivating EP, “Nocturnal Racer,” which showcases a blend of heavy metal elements with a strong blues influence. Formed in 2022, the band consists of Larissa Cavacece on vocals, Mira Sonnleitner on bass, Jamie Byrum on guitar and vocals, and originally Joe Sugar on drums, who has since been replaced by Terrica Catwood.
“Nocturnal Racer” – This opening track sets the tone with a riff that feels both vintage and modern, echoing influences from Motorhead, ZZ Top, and glam rock. The bluesy undertones give Stainless a unique edge, distinguishing them from typical Motorhead-inspired bands.
“Shot For Shot” – This track begins with a heavy metal riff but transitions into a 70s hard rock vibe reminiscent of Aerosmith and Van Halen. The production is noteworthy, balancing cleanliness with a gritty metal feel. The southern rock-inspired bridge adds depth, evoking comparisons to Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple.
“Believer” – Starting with a furious drumroll, this song has a speed metal feel, with tempo shifts and a galloping bass line that recalls Di’Anno-era Iron Maiden. The melodic guitar solo adds a touch of classic metal.
“The Evil Lies” – Opening with a riff reminiscent of early Fates Warning and US Power Metal from the 80s, this track features an ethereal and menacing vocal delivery. The overall tempo is more subdued but maintains an evil, captivating atmosphere.
“Snakebite”: A raw, mid-tempo track, with simple structure and addictive rhythm and riff (and some cowbell to make things even better) that is based on the gritty yet stunning vocals of Larissa.
“To Hot To Steal”: An unwritten law says that if a band has so brilliant B’ sides (“To Hot To Steal” was the B’ side on Snakebite debut 7” single of the band released on 2022), then we are dealing with some worth exploring. The 80’s vibe is present and a Judas Priest feeling and narrating approaching too.
“Nocturnal Racer” is a stunning EP (that the addition of the 2 songs from the “Snakebite” single makes it even richer) that covers a wide range of influences without sounding derivative. Larissa Cavacece’s raspy vocals are a standout feature, offering a unique sound that sets Stainless apart. The band’s ability to blend different styles while maintaining a cohesive sound is impressive. With their upcoming full-length album in the works, Stainless is definitely a band to watch in the future. The EP’s release on March 7, 2025, includes two bonus tracks from their previous single, making it a must-listen for fans of hard rock and heavy metal.
Recommendation: For fans of Motorhead, ZZ Top, Aerosmith, and those who enjoy a mix of hard rock and heavy metal with a bluesy twist.
