INFORMATION: Florida, once again, is the place where a band’s dream came true. Will Peplinski (guitars and bass) and Devin Alford (vocals and drum programming) put together their ideas and formed in 2012 Swine Overlord with the aim to play pure brutal death metal. Tony Davis (vocals) joined in the band in January 2014. They have already released one Demo, one Split with Whore Torture, Necrosectomy and Indigestible Suppuration, one EP and a full-length album, which was released some days ago. Their lyrical themes are about gore, horror and religion.
“PARABLES OF UMBRAL TRANSCEDENCE”: It’s pure brutal death metal, it’s so heavy and undiluted. It’s “Parables of Umbral Transcedence” of S.O. The bass is the classical slamming death metal playing that brings some massiveness in this powerful music. In some parts, it’s becoming more intense, reminding the old Cryptopsy’s feeling.
The “cutting” guitars are all along the album and they give the sense that something is happened out there. Moreover, wild riffings are almost slithering from slow to fast parts and vice versa, due to bring panic and disturbance. Guitars follows some standard rhythm paths, full of technical elements, but without been so impressive and without differentiate from some other bands of this kind of music.
The rhythms on drums are changed quite often; sometimes drums follow guitars and bass and some other times they fill the music with more boulder sounds. Of course, there are blast beats (manic or not), slowest and technical parts but Devin finds the way to connect them successfully with the rest instruments (music).
Vocals is brutal, is death metal, is guttural with a lot of well-placed gurgles and with the necessary depth. One more thing that is too important to be noticed is the two different types of vocals that exist, almost, everywhere and, also, the backing vocals which create a more psych, stressing and paranoid atmosphere. But, the overall combination of instruments with vocals leads to another common twisted compositions, with the most characteristic point to be the instability that existed all along this album.
IN CONCLUSION/GENERALLY: It’s true that “Parables of Umbral Transcedence” is a grunting primitive and raw album, which serves the original primal death metal. S.O.’s influences are many; bands such as Aborted, Brain Drill, Cannibal Corpse, Cephalic Carnage, Dying Fetus and Cryptopsy (especially the bass playing parts) are some of them. Generally speaking, sometimes, you have to play some existed ideas to release your first album. Taking into consideration that “Parables of Umbral Transcedence” is their first full-length, anyone can say that there will be some musical progress in the future. We keep in mind this album and, of course, we are waiting for their next release.

Ο Will Peplinski (guitars and bass) και Devin Alford (vocals and drum programming) ένωσαν τις δυνάμεις τους το 2012 και δημιούργησαν τους Swine Overlord με ένα και μοναδικό σκοπό: να παίξουν αυθεντικό brutal death metal. Ο Tony Davis (vocals) μπήκε στους S.O. τον Ιανουάριο του 2014. Ήδη έχουν ένα Demo, ένα Split με τους Whore Torture, Necrosectomy και Indigestible Suppuration, ένα EP και, τέλος, ένα ολοκληρωμένο άλμπουμ, το οποίο κυκλοφόρησε πριν από μερικές μέρες. Συνήθως, οι στίχοι τους αναφέρουν θέματα σχετικά με το gore, τη φρίκη και τη θρησκεία.
“PARABLES OF UMBRAL TRANSCEDENCE”: Είναι το αγνό brutal death metal, είναι τόσο βαρύ και “συμπαγή”. Είναι το “Parables of Umbral Transcedence” των S.O. Το μπάσο έχει το κλασσικό γεμάτο death metal παίξιμο, το οποίο δίνει έναν όγκο σε αυτήν την δυναμική μουσική. Σε μερικά σημεία, βέβαια, θυμίζει το μπάσο των Crypropsy.
Οι κοφτές κιθάρες υπάρχουν σε όλο το άλμπουμ και δίνουν το αίσθημα ότι σίγουρα κάτι συμβαίνει. Επιπλέον, τα άγρια riffs, που «γλιστράν» από τους αργούς στους γρήγορους ρυθμούς και το ανάποδο, προκαλούν πανικό και αρκετή φασαρία. Οι κιθάρες ακολουθούν τους standard ρυθμούς του death metal, με αρκετά τεχνικά στοιχεία, χωρίς, όμως, να προσφέρουν κάτι το εντυπωσιακό ή διαφορετικό από όλα τα υπόλοιπα συγκροτήματα του είδους.
Οι ρυθμοί των drums άλλοτε ακολουθούν τις κιθάρες και το μπάσο και άλλοτε γεμίζουν τη μουσική με πιο ογκώδεις ήχους. Φυσικά και υπάρχουν blast beats (μανιώδη ή μη), πιο αργά και τεχνικά μέρη αλλά ο Devin βρήκε τον τρόπο να τα συνδυάσει όλα αυτά επιτυχημένα με τα υπόλοιπα όργανα.
Τα φωνητικά είναι brutal, είναι death metal, είναι λαρυγγικά με αρκετά καλά τοποθετημένα gurgles και με το κατάλληλο βάθος που χρειάζονται. Επίσης, αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι υπάρχουν δύο ειδών φωνητικά σχεδόν σε όλο το άλμπουμ και πολύ καλά δεύτερα φωνητικά, τα οποία δημιουργούν μια πιο ψυχωτική και παρανοϊκή ατμόσφαιρα. Αλλά, όλος ο συνδυασμός των μουσικών οργάνων με τα φωνητικά δημιουργούν τις συνηθισμένες περίπλοκες συνθέσεις με το πιο χαρακτηριστικό σημείο να είναι η αστάθεια.
ΕΝ ΚΑΤΑΚΛΕΙΔΙ/ΓΕΝΙΚΟΤΕΡΑ: Είναι αλήθεια ότι το “Parables of Umbral Transcedence” είναι ένα πρωτόγονο και ακατέργαστο άλμπουμ, το οποίο υπηρετεί το αυθεντικό death metal. Οι επιρροές των S.O. είναι πολλές. Συγκροτήματα όπως οι Aborted, Brain Drill, Cannibal Corpse, Cephalic Carnage, Dying Fetus και Cryptopsy (ιδιαίτερα σε μερικά σημεία στο μπάσο) είναι μερικά από αυτά. Γενικά μιλώντας, μερικές φορές χρειάζεται να παίξεις ιδέες που ήδη υπάρχουν, ώστε να μπορέσεις να κυκλοφορήσεις το πρώτο σου άλμπουμ. Λαμβάνοντας υπόψη ότι το “Parables of Umbral Transcedence” είναι το πρώτο ολοκληρωμένο άλμπουμ των S.O., οποιοσδήποτε μπορεί να αναμένει κάποια βελτίωση στο μέλλον. Γι’ αυτό, έχοντας ακούσει αυτό το άλμπουμ, περιμένουμε την επόμενη ηχογράφησή τους.
