It all comes down to what “ingredients” you are looking for in Black Metal. Personally, since I was a little kid I wanted the weirdness, the eerie atmosphere, the artistic perversion, the psychological thriller atmosphere to be vividly captured on an album, in a way that would take me away from reality and introduce me to an alien mind, full of worries. Usually, I could tell from the first listen if I relate this way to a record.
Teitan, the one man band of Devi Hisgen from Rotterdam, created exactly the same feeling for me, taking me by the hand and introducing me in their world of paranoia. Tight, anarchic and sleazy riffs cling to a carefully orchestrated ambient/drone atmosphere, while industrializing elements are stirred with post-black concerns to confuse our senses. Think Grand Declaration era Mayhem getting drunk with late Behemoth and ending up in some mental institution, in a manic dance hand in hand with Hail Spirit Noir.
Special note to the lyrics, where something mysterious is definitely going on, with song titles like “Public Masturbation”, “Menstrual Blood and Pomegranate” and “Gang Mahal”. Proceed with caution and at your own risk.
They clearly belong to the “love or hate” category and you will easily understand from the singles, if there is any chance that they will connect with you. This particular weird mix of sound got me, as I found a right balance between hard and atmospheric parts and I’m sure that with extra work on the guitar parts, they will manage to give us even more twisted musical anomalies.
These records don’t go into the top-10 of the year, nor do they become a trend. Albums like In Oculus Abyss, stick in your subconscious and follow you. There is method in the chaos in this rollercoaster of madness.
