It’s tough to write a review for a release of one of your favorite bands. You feel so small when you have to talk about Ten, they have offered so much to music especially with their first 3 masterpieces. At their long career they played everything from epic metal to hard rock to AOR, always emphasizing to nostalgic melodies and always at a high quality level. Whenever a new release is due to arrive, anticipation and expectation from their fans is huge. Let’s cut to the chase now. Their new CD is better than it’s predecessor (Heresy and Creed) and the band now has 7 members, 3 of them are guitarists. This is a choice that probably aimed for a return to their early sound that was more guitar oriented. Does this work? Mostly, yes. But what about the compositions? Maybe it’s my idea but the album sound like a team effort and not like the work only of Gary Hughes. The addition of an extra guitarist emphasized at the guitar solos that are a delight. A classic Ten release, with their trademark ingredients, epic songs, nostalgic melodies and amazing vocals by the God (yes, God) Gary Hughes. The only flaw (if you twist my arm to say one) is probably the drum sound but this is actually nothing major. Hymns are plenty, Alone in the Dark (epic), Battlefield, It’s alive (amazing refrain), Albion born (could easily be included in one of their first 3 CDs), Sometimes love takes the long way home (from the title alone you understand that you must have a bottle of liquor by your side when you listen to it), A smuggler’s tale, Die for me (great songs), It ends this day (one of the guitarists must be a Uli Roth fan) and the last song is Wild Horses (nice one). On purpose I omitted one song. The best song of the CD, an eternal masterpiece, Gioco D’ Amore. To me this is one is the best song of 2014. Do you remember what I mentioned earlier about a bottle of liquor? To be on the safe side, when you listen to it remove any sharp objects and your shoe laces, from the room. It is such a great song that when you listen to it your soul aches. What have you done to us Gary …
