After casting our vote in the national election, our small party decided to set off to the rural area where Larissa Sports Center is stationed at, in order to relish a great death (and not only) metal gig.
I will get started with the site, which I had never visited in the past, (apart from events that took place at the external premises). Very cozy and capacious, it inspired a good vibe from first sight. Next thing to touch upon is the organizing. The abidance of the schedule was incredibly solid, something rather uncommon in events taking place in our country. So, congrats to all the bands and facilitators, moreover, since the next was a working day. They proved their respect to all the attendees. The attendance, by the way, was less than I expected, perhaps due to the singularity of this day (elections), or other factors that we have mentioned in previous reports.
So, let’s talk about the first band, which is Evertruth from Larissa. The bands setlist consisted exclusively by covers, while the band is currently working on their first own material. Specifically their setlist was: Iced Earth-Dark Saga, Megadeth-Symphony Of Destruction, Judas Priest-A Touch Of Evil, Motorhead-Orgasmatron (focused on the Sepultura version), Black Sabbath-Children Of The Grave και Slayer-Raining Blood. How did the band manage to perform all these motley bandsongs? Pretty good, and the singer must take credit for that the most, due to his voice-adjusting skills, shifting vocal styles according to the song. At the same time he was very communicative with the audience. To put it plain, the band played well-known song covers, performing quite well, that being ideal for the crowd to warm up, before the impending genocide.
Time has come for the band from Karditsa, Deacidified, which is placed in the death metal music scene. A super tight band, despite the fact that it has teamed up just a few months back. The slow-paced death rhythms followed the fast ones and vice versa, the vocals by the (one and only) Vaios Sven seemed like a sewer filled with misanthropy and despair, the guitar spat out great riffs non-stop, the drums collaborated flawlessly and vigorously in the band’s attempt to destroy our nerve cells, while the bass cast the final dose of “concrete” to built their wall of sound. After this short delirium, I must conclude by saying that the band’s sound and performance was overall satisfying, with sole complaint that the cover for Six Feet Under’s “Caged and Disgraced”, despite being a great song and the band’s adaptation was great, seemed to be out of place in Deacidified’s setlist.
It’s Emrace The Paradox’s turn to hit the stage, a band from Thessaloniki. This band is pretty fresh, with young lads as members, playing melodic metalcore. This was the second live act for the band and, had the band not mentioned that, it would be impossible for me to guess that, since the band’s appearance could never suggest that. The band had its own fan-club, which took its place in the front of the stage in order to enjoy the act and Embrace The Paradox tried their best to please them. The backing, melodic vocals made a helluva impression to me-I found them to be pleasingly unique. The band should imo unwind themselves on stage, grow some confidence and intensity. That will normally be achieved in time. We definitely have high hopes that the band will present some quality recording in the near future.
The scene is ready to welcome Mass Infection, whose last year’s album “For I Am Genocide” left its mark in the Greek death metal scene. It’s their second live show I ever watched, the first being at the Bolt Thrower’s live in Thessaloniki. Like then, the band was great this time as well, both in terms of sound and performance, with the difference that the band has now displayed its vast experience and the confidence, which originated from the general acknowledgement that they are now one of the best Greek death metal bands. “Death pits” came to life, lots of battering took place in front of the stage, while the rest watched the band unravel its vast technical skills. Their 45 minute long performance was not enough for one’s appetite to be satisfied. At the end, Mass Infection affirmed my belief that it can stand as equal to great foreign death metal bands, not only when it comes to its albums, but also for its stage performance.
A very delightful live show came to an end, leaving us eager to attend to similar mini festivals in the future. Until then, as always…..
