The Crown – Deathrace King

Deathrace King is the fourth studio album by The Crown, released on May 23, 2000. The Crown is a Swedish death/thrash metal band formed in 1990, known for their aggressive fusion of death metal and thrash with melodic elements. During the time of their fourth studio album, Deathrace King (released in 2000), the band’s lineup consisted of Johan Lindstrand on vocals, Marko Tervonen and Marcus Sunesson on guitars, Magnus Olsfelt on bass, and Henrik Axelsson on drums. This lineup is one of the band’s most cohesive and powerful, delivering the ferocious and tight sound that defines Deathrace King.

Johan Lindstrand’s distinctive, raw vocal style and the dual guitar attack of Tervonen and Sunesson contributed significantly to the album’s intense atmosphere and intricate riffing. Magnus Olsfelt’s bass work underpinned the aggressive rhythms, while Henrik Axelsson’s drumming drove the relentless pace with precision. This particular lineup embodies the band’s peak era, with members demonstrating both technical skill and brutality that have earned Deathrace King a revered status in the death/thrash metal community.

The Crown’s work in this period showed a maturity and cohesion that made them one of the standout acts in the Scandinavian extreme metal scene, blending melody and sheer aggression in a way that remains influential to this day. This era not only cemented their legacy but also showcased the band’s ability to balance technical prowess and raw energy throughout the album.

The lyrics on the album revolve heavily around themes tied to Satanism, destruction, and rebellion, but with a focused devotion to what can be termed “authentic religious Satanism” rather than just generic evil imagery. Throughout the album, Satanic and anti-religious references appear repeatedly, crafting a unified story of wild destruction and dark spiritual intensity. This thematic coherence enhances the aggressive and chaotic nature of the music, reinforcing the band’s message through vivid imagery rooted in defiance and darkness.

Musically, Deathrace King blends death metal’s aggression with thrash metal’s speed, leaning slightly towards a melodic death/thrash style. The album is characterized by relentless high-energy riffs, powerful drumming, and fierce vocal delivery. It features such standout tracks as “Deathexplosion,” noted for its catchy riffs and standout guitar solos that rival even those of contemporaries like At the Gates. Other important tracks include “Executioner: Slayer of the Light,” “Back from the Grave,” and the slower but heavily atmospheric “Vengeance” and “Dead Man’s Song,” which showcase the band’s knack for mixing melody and brutality effectively.

The album’s craftsmanship is exceptional, with tightly constructed songs that maintain an “enraged pace” yet have moments of melodic tension and technical precision. This intensity is balanced with moments of groove and slower compositions that create atmosphere without losing the album’s aggressive edge. Notable guest appearances include Tomas Lindberg on “Devil Gate Ride” and Mika Luttinen from Impaled Nazarene on “Total Satan,” adding extra texture and collaboration from prominent figures in the extreme metal scene.

The record is celebrated as a near-perfect death/thrash metal album as the band’s ability to craft memorable riffs and the excellent pacing between songs testifies. It stands as a key reference point for the death-thrash subgenre, appreciated for pushing the intensity and technical prowess to the extreme without sacrificing melody or cohesion.

Deathrace King captures The Crown at their peak—delivering an album that is brutal and melodic, fast and heavy, with relentless energy and exceptional musicianship. It remains a landmark release beloved by fans and influential in death/thrash circles.
