“Memento Mori” is The Negation’s second release, where the French guys maintain their rhythms and hatred at high levels. They’re not delivering something innovative; however they don’t adulterate their black metal sound with other elements. “Memento Mori” is a typical yet notable release in this genre.

From the very first “normal” track of the record, i.e. “The True Enemy” until the last one, i.e. “Resistance”, The Negation beat us up relentlessly with classic, traditional black metal. Nothing less. Fast guitars, heavy drums and screams that belong to this particular genre. The only differences lie within the intro and outro tracks, which have set as a goal to convey the feeling of nihilism and what this means for the band. The production is quite good, without belittling the black metal aesthetics.

Nihilism possesses the record’s booklet, as well, with pictures depicting the worst side of the human nature, with executions, undernourished bodies and mass graves. Same thing unfolds in the phrases used in the booklet and of course in the lyrics. Nihilism is portrayed in its most cruel form via the lyrical themes, which include war, demise, annihilation of every hope and how people are manipulated and slaughtered for the sake of total command or the possibility of the world’s destruction. There’s neither God nor Devil in “Memento Mori”. There are only humans heading for self – destruction, unhorsing God via science and philosophy, though he keeps on praying on his corpse, as the band mentions in “Faith in God’s Corpse”.

The Negation haven’t invented the wheel or something you’ll listen to and this that’s innovative. Yet, they delivered a decent album that follows its genre. The fans of the genre will love it.
