One of the most powerful Death Metal acts of Thessaloniki, but also in general amidst our country’s scene, are those ‘bastards’ called The Psalm. Although they were first introduced to the audience with that name in 2013, the band members were pretty well-known to us, since The Psalm are actually former members of the similar act Nocturnal Vomit, who had already built a reputation for themselves in extreme music, with many releases, collaborations and concerts. Keeping this in mind, we basically knew what to expect from this trio. Everything was confirmed with the release of “I” in 2015, initially in the form of cassette in June by Unholy Domain Records and two months later as a 7” vinyl by Hell’s Fire Records. Classic, monolithic Death Metal, with filtered influences and ideas, but simultaneously a very strong / unique ‘personality’. Vicious playing, with uncontrollable momentum and violent character, which is mostly based on deep and drooping sounds, thus creating a dark and mysterious atmosphere. Speaking about the guitar work, we come across intelligent riffs, melodies and lead parts, while wild vocals awaken primitive / unprecedented feelings. And all of the aforementioned happen in just two songs ‘A Mass For The Bereaved’ and ‘Ascetic’. In the latest version of the album, released by Repulsive Echo, which actually was the trigger for this presentation / review / report of ideas, we are dealing with a widened tracklist. In this case, three tracks have been added, i.e. “The Mystical Meeting”, “Typhlosis” and “The Yawning Chasm”. Starting from the first extra, in “The Mystical Meeting” The Psalm are covering their way the homonymous track of Rotting Christ, a track that was recorded and released for the official tribute collection of Metal Hammer, honoring of Rotting Christ, in May 2016. Next, we find the track “Typhlosis”, which for the connoisseurs of ‘things’, was first released with the compilation ‘Monomaniac vol. 2 & 3’ that was released in September 2013. Finally, “The Yawning Chasm” is basically the first taste that Psalm gave us from their upcoming debut album, which is expected to be released shortly. This track was recorded live on 16/03/2016 at Eightball Live Stage in Thessaloniki, the evening when The Psalm was the supporting act for Asphyx. On the most procedural issues, the recording and mixing of ‘A Mass For The Bereaved’ and ‘Ascetic’ took place at Stonehouse studio in 2014 engineered by Mike Gougolis, while the mastering process was handled at Mix Studio in 2015 by Fotis. As for the mastering of “The Yawning Chasm”, it was handled by No Solace Studios (Mgła). The cover artwork is a creation by Nikola Samori (www.nicolasamori.com), while Frater Teth created the logo used. The final layout was arranged by Nikos Tsiolis. Invest!
