The Scimitar is a newcomer band from California, U.S. and Doomsayer is their debut full length album, while the band has been active only for two years now. Sharing members with the known stoner / doom act Black Pyramid, The Scimitar also plays music similar to these styles, focusing on heavy rock riffs and doom passages.
Doomsayer has a dim aesthetic, built on the thick guitar sound and the riffs that blossom with it. The record consists of seven tracks that last thirty five minutes in total, with three instrumentals and a cover of Motörhead’s famous track “Metropolis”, including all the favorite tunes of stoner fans in terms of music.
The band moves mostly in middle and slow paced rhythms, allowing the hefty riffing to be fully enjoyable and providing tempos for easy headbanging as well. The first two tracks “The Taker” and “World Unreal” open the album warmly and showcase the basis of what the band has to offer, when the third piece “Babylon” has no vocals and really catchy guitar lines, almost in a Monster Magnet kind of way.
Apart from the legit guitars, the bass is active and audible. It delivers a great collaboration with the drums and it can be heard at all times, especially during a guitar solo. The spectral vocals of the record are mainly clean, going a little more harsh at times, hence they sound exactly like what they should sound in such compositions.
After the Motörhead cover and a short piece of acoustic guitars, the last two tracks of the record, “Void Traveler” and “Crucifer”, go a bit more wicked and doomy. Lasting longer than usual (seven – eight and a half minutes respectively), they get more atmospheric with clean guitar parts, shrieked vocals and a menacing vibe as a whole. If you have to listen to a selected number of tracks off this album, these two are the ones to choose.
The Scimitar offer an appealing and easylistening record, accurately described by the band’s genre. For the people who admire such bands, this one should be another among favorites, since they do their job in an awesome way.
