Threshold are one of the few modern progressive metal bands that remember to actually write and record songs instead of overly complex, long and meaningless jam sessions. Their latest work “For The Journey” is no exception, it might be a bit darker but it remains full of great songs and musicianship.
Fans of the band should feel right at home here, since most songs are very close to previous efforts by Threshold. The opening track “Watchtower on the Moon” finds a great balance between strong guitar riffs and beautiful vocals and keyboards melodies. Groom’s guitars really shine through the entirety of the record as do Damien Wilson’s vocals and nowhere is that more apparent than the 12-minute epic “The Box”, which proves their talent, since a song that long is really hard to pull off without it being boring(even for small amounts of time). Emotional performances and strong writing(both music and lyrics-wise) make up the rest of the album, as showcased in “Turned to Dust”, the breathtaking “The Mystery Show” and the majestic closing track “Siren Sky”.
Not much more to say here, Threshold fans should just go out and buy this. For the rest of progressive fans, as with most of their work, this too is a great jumping-on point, full of great songs and flawless performances representing the band in the best way. Fans of the overcomplicated variation of the genre might not find what they want here but should nonetheless give it a chance.
