Poland – Metal – Occultism, is there anything else needed for successfull recipe in the extreme sound; NO! In Gdansk, Poland therefore, Behemoth were created in 1991 in a catholic society, in the fanaticism of the Church in which they themselves had to find a way to express their free thought and opposition to all this “divine” daze. I will make a huge jump from the 91’ to 2009, when they released their ninth album, which I will deal with today!
Evangelion, the spread of God’s word … that is its meaning, is what Behemoth do desecrating every Christian stereotype and giving another explanation and another interpretation in the persons and parables of monotheistic supreme entity. This of course sent Nergal three times in court on charges of insult to Divine, but that’s another story.
The recordings of Evangelion started in February 2009 and ended in May of that year in Gdansk, in the Radio Gdansk studio, the mixing was done in England by the great Colin Richardson, no need to mention works of his and whoever does not know of him should seek and learn for him. It is that easy!! Nine songs with Lucifer in last place, sung in Polish with the participation of the famous Polish artist Maciej Maleńczuk in the vocals.
The lyrics of the album follow the classic Behemoth trails, delightfull, for those interested in that part . The way Nergal sings is perfectly connected with the lyrics that spit that exact moment, in a splendid performance. Apart from the basic quartet, further ten musicians have participated with various wind instruments, keyboards but also sitar. Incredible job with all the instruments maintaining a biblical atmosphere, dark, just what suits Behemoth.
The album cover depicted “The great whore” as mentioned in the book of Revelation, a biblical monster, symbol of absolute evil connected with the antichrist etc. But it’s something deeper, it’s a symbol of power and revolution, it’s the free thought that can finally stand its ground, that can scream of its existence… has its own will and does not dwell unto any god, this is “the mother of all prostitutes” and this is Behemoth for a Catholic but also Orthodox society.
The album was released in Europe by Nuclear blast and in America by Metal Blade in various versions.
