Trident was a -first formed as a- trio band from North Wales by John Owen (guitars/vocals), Dave Alexander (bass) and John Pritchard (drums), in 1980. Almost 3 years after their formation the band [with a brand-new line-up consisting by: Tim Spink (Bass, Keyboards, Bass Pedals, backing Vocals) / Reg Marshall (Drums, backing Vocals) / John Owen (Guitars, Vocals)] released a glorious 7” and highly acclaimed single entitled “Destiny / Power of the Trident” back in 1983. Trident’s “Destiny” (the song) is another anthem of N.W.O.B.H.M. that all fanatics of the subgenre worship but the majority of metal fans may not have heard even once in their lives! Probably its date of release (1984 was too late for N.W.O.B.H.M. heroes), was the (main and probably the only) reason that the band didn’t get more commercial success or recognition. In this rare 7” release in the A’ side we have the anthemic, more than awesome, title track, that is full of energy, has a great main riff, a terrific guitar solo and a chorus that sticks to your head. It’s one of these songs like Overdrive’s “On The Run”, Virtue’ s “We Stand To Fight”, Energy’s ‘Fight for Freedom’, Sacrifice’s “Streetfighter” and damn so many many more cult metal songs/hymns that may not be from one hit wonder bands, still the songs have bigger status than their composers. B’ side song entitled “Power Of The Trident” is top notch too with a similar approach and feeling, written in the vein of early Maiden (especially the intro) and Tokyo Blade. “Destiny” 7” is a forgotten gem, a rare uber-cult classic, a perfect N.W.O.B.H.M. release. Now 34 years after band’s founder John Owen, gave access to Cult Metal Classics Records to the master tapes of 18 songs in total, most of which see the light of day on vinyl and CD for the first time officially. Not all of the songs were written under the name of Trident as the band ended in 1985 and John Owen formed Filthy Rich. Filthy Rich had a less heavy metal approaching but still had a great melodic hard rock sound and released a marvelous single entitled “She’s 17 / Love Ain’t A Fool”. So, what we have here in this release is a substantial collection of rarities including both aforementioned singles, featuring Trident’s “Flint Demo”, the “Broken Dream” cassette album and some notable unreleased tracks, with remastered sound. In addition to all that the booklet is full of photos from the 80’s, band story and lyrics to all songs and a really impressive artwork. Whether you were anticipating or not for this compilation don’t miss the opportunity to grab one of the most remarkable reissues and important N.W.O.B.H.M. cult releases of the decade.
