Tyrant | War Dance | 666 Packs | 11.01.2015 | Live@ Kyttaro Club, Athens

When some time ago it was announced by Eat Metal Records that the English band Tyrant would play live after 30 years and even that they will appear on Greek territory, I was not exactly sure what to expect. However, because I generally support the underground scene and the ticket price was very low, I decided to attend to the event. Along with the English band 666 PACKS and War Dance would appear to the show too, who would present their first record attempts “Free Beer Here” and “Wrath For The Ages” respectively.

The evening was opened by 666 Packs, which I hardly caught from the beginning, but I knew their sound and style from other recent appearance. It is a Rock n Roll band in the style of AC / DC roughly. Generally they have interesting compositions and a special singer with a unique style and some burr in his voice. They were comfortable on stage and performed excellently their songs, praising the beerdrinking and debauchery in general.

Thereafter and without delay on stage hit War Dance, who seemed to be more popular as part of the audience seemed to be there only for them. Besides, at the end of their show half the audience had left the club. They started with an intro-cover on a track of Greek songwriter Psarantonis and continued with their own tracks from their debut album which was supposedly released at that day. It is an interesting band influenced by Manowar, Warlord etc., but with more modern sound. They performed their songs good, as well and the cover on ‘Gloves Of Metal’ the aforementioned Manowar. On stage they were comfortable and had good “stance”. Personally, and as a lover of this sound, I believe that they have very good compositions, but they need a little more color and range, especially the vocals, because at points they become monotonous.

At 22.30 the scene was captured by Tyrant, who from the beginning showed us that they had made several rehearsals, thus they were comfortable and cheerful on the performance of their tracks, but also and at the contact with the crowd. There were moments of particular tension to the listening of their known tracks like ‘Lonely Eyes’, ‘Hold Back The Lightning’, ‘Captured’, ‘Eyes Of A Stranger’, etc., and awkward moments where the audience watched rather numb, especially to covers like Queen’s ‘We Will Rock You’ and Scorpions ‘Black Out’, since it was a purely metal audience, obviously not very amused with such choices. The band, however, had somehow to cover the required time of the concert, as the band does not have many songs in its repertoire. There were heard some extra new tracks that probably mean they will release a record in the future (I suppose from Eat Metal Records?), as for encore on demand from the crowd they played again ‘Lonely Eyes’ and ‘Hold Back The Lightning’, which happens to be my favorite! Generally the audience which was about 150-200 people seemed to have fun and left the club with very good impressions.
