The frequency of UDO’s releases has reached a point where Dream Theater’s releases seem decent. However, this release is different from the various metal – meets – classic albums that have come out from time to time. As announced by Udo, it’s about time to withdraw from being musically active and we only have to thank him from the bottom of our hearts for the service he has provided to heavy metal all these years. His contribution is important, selfless, and honest. He’s a true soldier of metal. Total respect.
In this blue-ray / DVD / 2CD, U.D.O. chose to do something different with the orchestral choice. His thought was innovative, though closely related with the military look that was established since Accept. He chose for this special occasion the orchestra of the German Navy, the Marine musik korps Nordsee. Although there were some fans by Udo in the orchestra, the rest was natural to be a bit more nervous facing the metal audience. Following the recommendations and the wholehearted support of the public, they came out of their shells, participated more actively and became one with the band and the crowd. Even the director of the orchestra liked the whole effort.
The concert begins with the introductory track «Das Boot» in order to get the crowd acquainted with the orchestra. «Future Land», «Independence Day» and «Animal Instinct» follow, making us realize once again how perfectly and harmoniously these two genres match. The performance of the band was perfect and the collaboration between orchestra and choir was tight. It is noteworthy that the orchestrations were taken good care off and a fantastic job was done even to the last detail. U.D.O. is in great shape. With the dire performance of all members and especially since UDO’s voice is unchanged over the years, the result is fascinating. After those tracks the orchestra offers a dreamy perform of the majestic «The Hall Of The Mountain King», facing the apotheosis of the crowd. In the tracks that followed, the duet with Doro on «Dancing With An Angel» stands out, however the most surprising track was «Trainride In Russia (Поезд по России)», with a badass old man, a member of the orchestra with a twisted mustache, taking the accordion and jamming the track as heard on «Thunderball». It’s the best moment of the concert in one of the best tracks of Udo. In the end the old man collects the crowd’s excitement and gives something back, doing the devilhorns. This is metal, eh !?
That’s the difference between listening to something and actually seeing it. In the end, there is a big difference between picture and sound, so watch it whenever you get the chance. And finally a parenthesis with a little humor; the title of the release should be “Udo In the Navy.”
