Hailing from Sweden and England, Ashcloud were formed in 2013, though they were active during 2005-2006, when they were known as Skinbag. The band is consisted of just two members: Jonny Petersson on vocals, bass and guitars and Gareth Nash on lead guitar and vocals. If you’re wondering about Mr. Pettersson, you got that right. He is the vocalist of the legendary Wombbath, Just Before Dawn, Syn:drom and numerous other acts, so you probably understand what you’re up for. They have already released a full length album (“Abandon All Light”, 2015) and two demos (“Soul Consumer”, 2006 & “Consumed by Darkness”, 2013). This time I will elaborate on the band’s second full length album “Children of the Chainsaw”, which was released via Xtreem Music on May 1st. The album reeks of old-school festering Death Metal, combined with a bit of chaotic Black Metal riffs and that Crusty aesthetics on drums and atmosphere. We’re not dealing with typical Death Metal structures, yet the overall outcome is utterly satisfying. Avoiding the asphyxiating chugged guitars usually found in the genre, Ashcloud have melodies and variety on rhythms, thus keeping our interest at high levels. Most of the times, there’s culmination / escalation of structures in the tracks, creating a cathartic feeling to the listener. One of the most characteristic features of the record are the double vocals; Jonny and Gareth take turns on the microphone. Combined with the post – apocalyptic / horror lyrical themes and the dark atmosphere that’s created, “Children of the Chainsaw” becomes one of the must-listen-to releases of this year. It’s not top of the tops ever, yet it’s full of dynamics, violent energy and creates an urge to destroy, so give it a shot. You won’t be disappointed.
