Unleashed is one of the biggest Swedish old school death metal bands and one of the greatest in Europe, having released legendary albums such as “Where no Life Dwells” (1991) and “Shadows in the Deep” (1992). Johnny Hedlund, the stubborn mastermind behind the band, has the guts to continue the band’s crusade till today, when the band, under the wings of Nuclear Blast Records (for third full-length in a row), release their no.12 album called “Dawn of the Nine”.
To be honest, Unleashed, for more than a decade now, release albums which just keep the band into the game, sometimes with more success (“Odalheim”-2012) than others (“Hell’s Unleashed”-2002 – although, the title track and “Don’t Want to be Born” of this album are hymns!).
In “Dawn of the Nine”, once more the lyrical themes are dedicated to mythology, while the music stuff is the classic Unleashed style we have been used to. It seems that the band has accepted a way of recording, presenting albums that have many similarities in music and lyrics. Easygoing song-writing and riffs; and albums with songs-highlights, but also many fillers. So here we have some highlight tracks such as “Let the Hammer Fly”, “Welcome the Son of Thor!” and “Where is Your God Now?” (also released as a single). The artwork is very good, and created by Par Olofsson (Exodus, Malevolent Creation, Revocation, Immolation, Job for a Cowboy and many more).
In conclusion, “Dawn of the Nine” is not meant to be the great album that many may await; but those who enjoyed the band’s previous releases, will view it as a diamond. Unfortunately, I don’t belong to this category and I have more demands from such a big band. Unleashed is a group that should be releasing masterpieces, and “Dawn of the Nine” is not one of them.
