Unleashed – Fire Upon Your Lands

Genre: Death Metal
Country: Sweden
Label: Napalm Records
Year: 2025

Unleashed’s new album “Fire Upon Your Lands” marks their fifteenth studio release and is a potent reaffirmation of their status as veterans of Swedish death metal. The album, out via Napalm Records, delivers a concise yet powerful collection of 11 tracks, each around three minutes long, combining sharp, aggressive riffs with compelling storytelling rooted in Viking and historical themes.

“Fire Upon Your Lands” is a compelling addition to their discography, marked by an unexpected ease of listening that sets it apart in the death metal genre. While the band stays true to their signature sound, this album strikes a balance between intensity and accessibility, making it engaging for both longtime fans and newcomers alike.

The album opens strongly with “Left for Dead,” (that grabs attention with its relentless energy and gritty vocals) setting a fierce tone with lyrical narrative and intense musical delivery. From there, the album continues with high-energy tracks like “The Road to Haifa Pier” and “War Comes Again,” (which delivers a crushing, anthemic punch that perfectly encapsulates the album’s themes of conflict and resilience), while “A Toast to the Fallen” (that offers a more atmospheric and reflective tone, providing a dynamic contrast within the album) showcasing the band’s ability to blend furious death metal with melodic and rhythmic complexity. The title track offers a mid-paced anthem with evocative archaic flair, while songs like “To My Only Son” and “Hold Your Hammers High!” mix galloping beats and slowed-down choruses that highlight the band’s dynamic range.

A notable strength throughout the album is Johnny Hedlund’s vocals—his raspy growls offer both heaviness and narrative depth, enhancing the album’s storytelling feel. The band’s chemistry, honed over decades, creates a tight and synchronized musical performance that feels both fresh and authentic.

The overall vibe of the album is both fierce and strangely cozy, making it a great listen whether you’re gearing up for battle or winding down for the evening. It effectively balances fun, aggression, and a sense of epic storytelling, all wrapped in methodically crafted and disciplined songwriting. This release stands as a testament to the enduring fire within Unleashed and their ability to keep the spirit of Viking-inspired death metal burning strong in 2025. Highly recommended with a beer in hand!
