Usurper (that were formed in 1993) is a 4 piece act that resurrected from its ashes, as silently it left the stage for 14 years somewhere in 2005 after the release of their album entitled ‘Cryptobeast’. The Chicago based band was one of those blackened thrash bands that were loyal to the genre while had the potential to explore new ideas and elements beyond it. They played a Celtic Frost-like Thrash following the Tom G. Warrior singing pattern, with memorable songs, combining anthemic choruses with the black metal atmosphere and the thrash violent fury. Guitarist Rick Scythe (Scythe, Nightshade) and drummer Joe Apocalyptic Warlord (Bones) reformed Usurper with ‘Cryptobeast’ vocalist Danny “Tyrantor” Lawson and new bassist Scott Maelstrom and as these guys haven’t changed their style a bit; it seems like their 14 years hiatus never existed. Lyrically speaking Usurper don’t preach and don’t bother about social relevant topics or religious/political ones. They write songs about monster folklore, paranormal, ancient battles or civilizations that fit perfectly with their straight-forward sound. ‘Lords of the Permafrost’ is their 6th studio album and convinced me that these Chicagoans returned, not to claim any throne in extreme metal, but to have fun and to chug to death! Ok, I’m kidding about the chugging guitars, which could be used sparingly and in addition to hear more solos instead. I liked it, I recommend it!
