Excuse me what years are we? Venator’s second full-length album, Psychodrome, released on April 25, 2025, sees the Austrian quintet on perfect shape leading the New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal (NWOTHM) scene. The band, formed in Linz in 2016, delivers a record that is both a love letter to early 1980s European heavy metal and a testament to their-own evolving identity.
Psychodrome is unapologetically rooted in the classic European heavy metal tradition. Venator’s sound draws less from American power or epic metal, instead channeling the energy of early NWOBHM (think Judas Priest) and continental acts like Scorpions, Pretty Maids, and Finland’s Oz. The album’s production is crisp and clear, allowing each instrument and vocal nuance to shine without sacrificing the vintage atmosphere.
The album kicks off with a 80s-inspired synth intro before launching into a barrage of melodic riffs, pounding rhythms, and memorable hooks. Songs like “Steal the Night” and “Dynamite” showcase Venator’s knack for crafting catchy, concise tracks with immediate verse-to-chorus payoffs. The band isn’t afraid to experiment with tempo and dynamics-moments like the speed-thrash burst in “Astral Seduction” or the atmospheric breakdown in “The Final Call” add depth and variety to the listening experience.
Hans Huemer’s vocals may not boast the widest range, but his delivery is marked by impeccable timing and a unique interplay with the rhythm section. He often plays just ahead of or behind the beat, keeping the vocal lines fresh and engaging. The guitar work of Anton Holzner and Leon Ehrengruber is both potent and melodic, while Stefan Glasner’s bass and Jakob Steidl’s drums provide a powerful, balanced backbone.
Venator’s commitment to an authentically European heavy metal sound sets them apart from many of their NWOTHM peers. The album’s atmosphere is steeped in nostalgia, yet the band avoids feeling like a mere retro act thanks to their dynamic songwriting and passionate performances. Psychodrome is not about reinventing the genre, but about celebrating and refining it with heart-on-sleeve sincerity.
Highlights: “Steal the Night”, the Q5-inspired rhythm hymn with the infectious chorus, “Children of the Beast”, “Dynamite” which showcases the band’s growth and individual musicianship, “The Final Call” that features a unique bass-led interlude and spoken word segment, “Radar” with its melodic solo, “Astral Seduction” the emphatic closer of the album with a burst of speed and intensity.
Psychodrome is a thoroughly enjoyable, well-crafted album that will appeal to fans of classic heavy metal and newcomers alike. While it doesn’t break new ground, it excels in delivering high-quality, memorable songs with a distinct European flair. Venator’s evolution as songwriters and performers is evident throughout, making this a standout release in the modern traditional metal landscape.
Recommended for fans of early 80s European heavy metal, NWOTHM enthusiasts, and anyone seeking melodic, energetic, and heartfelt metal.
