Verge – The Process of Self – Becoming

Genre: Black Metal
Country: Finland
Label: I, Voidhanger
Year: 2017

Having already released two full length albums, Verge brought a new gift to mankind; their latest album “The Process of Self – Becoming”, released by I, Voidhanger Records. Reaching their third full length, Verge seem way more solid and mature than ever, with their unique Black Metal approach vividly standing out amidst the lot. “The Process of Self – Becoming” is consisted of 7 tracks in total and is divided into three main chapters; ‘Aesthetic”, ‘Moral’ and ‘Religious’. As easily deducted by the album’s track titles, Verge deal with Theosophy, along with Misanthropy and Negativity. That’s reflected into the band’s music as well. In the fast parts of the album, we come across classic (mostly second wave) Black Metal structures, satisfying our need to connect with our roots; in the parts however where Verge slow things down, the alternations in the vocal performance (along with their theatricality), the ominous droid leitmotivs and those light ‘strokes’ of Post-Black, make “The Process of Self – Becoming” a means to question your existence, while melancholically letting your hate towards mankind flow rapidly. Besides, the lyrical themes of this album are loosely based on philosopher Sören Kierkegaard´s theory of existence stages, as the band explains. Chaotic, soul-crushing, at times unbearably heavy. As it should be. Give it a try.

{The album comes in a 4-panel digipak, including a 16-page booklet, complete with lyrics and track by track commentaries. “The Process of Self – Becoming” was recorded, mixed and mastered by Tom Brooke at Tonehaven Studio in 2016.}
