Victorious March is a doom – death metal band coming from Thessaloniki, Greece, formed in June 2013 by guitarist and composer Panos Sougioultzis, along with Yannis Karakasis on drums (No Second Chance, ex-Kafar, ex-Bowel Vomit, ex-Noise Against Silence) and George Kechagias guitar (No Second Chance, ex -Kafar, ex-Mind Slavery, ex-Overmind’s Curse).
This trio recorded its first demo entitled “The Battle of a Doomed Nation” and that’s more or less what I/we expected. The group offers a fairly dark and heavy Doom metal, which is grafted with many Death metal elements, lengthy epic moments and some good samples scattered here and there (listen to “The Cave”) which give a spicy flavor to the entire release. On the whole, the album consists of beautiful compositions and relatively simple ones, avoiding complexity, apart from some moments where the band’s sound becomes more exponential (listen to “Storm Before Doom” – here lie the Death metal elements mentioned before). Fast flowing and easily heard, it’s a record that doesn’t tire you, responding this way to the requirements of its demo format. What I personally want of the band is to elaborate a little more on their compositions. It’s a good thing to avoid a pretentious outcome, however a bit more perplex compositions will uplift the personality of the band. Also, I was surprised by the fact that the record sounds a bit flat, like lacking depth. Even though the production seems to be properly done with balanced instruments and delivery, some more depth would be appreciated. Besides, we are talking about Doom/Death Metal, so a torrential quality of sound is wanted by default.
Surely, Victorious March will keep us interested in the future, so I hope to listen to their full length work soon enough. The small taste we got from the band’s first release was quite satisfactory. I hope that their next release will be even better .
