VOD is the solo project of bassist Dave Trembley and his origin is from Quebec of Canada. The debut album was released nine months ago (“Decibuus”) and now, April 2015, his second full-length album is real and is called “Tuurngait”. He continues with this indescribable and characteristic sound but is more aimed towards post-metal with many elements of sub-bass sludge doom music.
First of all, the meaning of “Tuurngait” is “Ghost” and just this in mind you can imagine what is going to happen. The whole atmosphere of the album is quite mysterious and you discover this hour by hour.
Musically, there are only basses with no guitars and of course a lot of drum programming. All kind of basses are combined together quite successfully, offering a very intense feeling. Compositions come from another world, maybe the world of isolation, and this is the reason for being so melancholic and at the same time so “mad”. Of course there are many-many effects so as not existing “music gaps or blanks”. Vocals are coming from the crypt, deep beneath the ground and the chaotic voices with a growling pall fulfil the whole heavy atmosphere.
Some trumpets are existent in two (intermission) songs, giving a different sense to this release. Especially, the third track is like coming from prohibition, back to ‘20s, but in a more “nowadays” way. We could say that there are some jazz elements all around the release.
Generally, I could say that the more you listen to this CD the more you like it! Finally, the words of Dave are the most appropriate for closing this review: “Tuurngait is an album about winter, snow, night, isolation, and cold. Riffs being built, atmospheres rising and then falling back, polyrhythms and off-time signatures. All played on bass guitar, with drums and vocals. Loads of bass and sub-bass frequencies, and lot of droning and good riffing.”
Recommended Songs: “Inutuuvuq”, “Ikuma” and “Aniqsataqpaa”.
