Five years after their creation, the release of a couple of singles and their part for a Riot tribute, Walpyrgus finally managed to record and release their debut album with the title “Walpyrgus Nights”. I see a black/red cover artwork, crosses, titles coming out straight from the old horror movies catacombs, heavy metal, I honestly hope to get along with these guys. When I say guys, I’m always referring to great musicians with an impressive bio of successful past bands, having been part of October 31, While Heaven Wept, Twisted Tower Dire, Hellrazor and Viper. The album consists of 8 tracs, with the 7th one being a cover of Witch Cross’s Light Of A Torch. Seeing “Dead Of Night” as a title track from the intro, I thought it would be some sort of instrumental with echoes, screams, growls that will take the listener to a cemetary or a forest. I was completely wrong. I goes in fast, steady, with high-sounding riffs, straight out of the 80’s catacombs. I expected it to be a little more “indigestive” if you might, the truth is, but the road is still long. Reaching “Dead Girls”, The 69 Eyes’ prime releases come in mind, glam-like hard rock, not to say hard rock and people start throwing stones on me. Cheerful enough. All tracks pretty much are on the same level. Wasn’t it considered to be dark and halloween-like? The music is good, the vocals are good, but the aesthetics are in no case like the band wanted to be felt like. As a whole, it is a very interesting even though rather “light” release if you may, with catchy songs that stick in your mind and make you sing along. A great amount of horror, darkness and attitude is missing though, something really important for such band. You can actually consider it more as a modern approach of old legends. There are still things missing and I really hope to something better by such talented musicians in the future.
