In a music world full of quick trends, classic heavy metal still has a strong heartbeat. You can hear it clearly on Rise, the fantastic debut album from Athens-based band Wildfire. This album is more than just songs. It’s a carefully made tribute to the best of 80s and 90s melodic metal, given a fresh, modern sound and a lot of energy.
From the movie-like keyboard intro “Leap Of Faith,” the album sets a big stage. It flows perfectly into the title track, “Rise,” which is a total anthem and shows what this band is all about. It’s packed with energetic guitar riffs, high-flying twin guitars, and a chorus that makes you want to pump your fist in the air. It’s the perfect opener. Vocalist Bill Chrepas immediately shows his skill, singing with a clean, powerful voice that might remind you of masters like Geoff Tate or a young Bruce Dickinson.
What makes Rise special isn’t just that it sounds like older music. It’s the high-quality music and songwriting. This band knows how to write a catchy tune but also knows how to play their instruments really well. The guitar work from Tolis G Pol and Dimitris Varsamis is fantastic. They play complex solos and dueling parts that are both skillful and easy to listen to.
This melodic feeling is supported by the keyboards from Marios Theofilatos, which are easy to notice but never too much. On tracks like “Nights” (which has a classic rock feel) or the energetic “Inside The Box,” the keys add a rich layer of sound, making the songs feel big and epic.
But the album’s biggest highlight and most surprising moment is “Navigators.” The song builds from a steady beat into a huge, epic track. The best part? Instead of a typical guitar solo, there’s a soulful and unexpected clarinet solo. It’s a brave, smart choice that really works, showing the band isn’t afraid to try new things while still staying true to their sound.
Even when the music slows down, the quality stays high. “Mirror’s Edge” is a perfect power ballad. It starts softly with piano and vocals and builds up into a powerful wave of emotion and big guitars. It proves the band is great at slower songs, too. The album finishes with “Far And Beyond (In Hell)” and the bonus track “Night With A Witch,” a fun, high-energy rock song that ends things on a high note.
Produced by David Prudent at Made in Hell studio, the album has a huge, polished sound. You can hear every instrument clearly—from Andronikos Maltezos’s powerful drumming to Dimitris Megalios’s solid bass lines. The final mix is so good, it sounds like it came from a major record label.
Rise is a bold statement. It proves that classic melodic heavy metal is not only alive, but can still be made with passion, skill, and fresh ideas. Wildfire has delivered a debut album that is confident, ambitious, and extremely catchy. This isn’t just a good start; it’s the arrival of an exciting new band for the European metal scene.
